  • How much does a theatre nurse earn in the UK?

    It depends on whether the theatre nurse is working in a private hospital or within the NHS. The average salary for a theatre nurse in the UK is £32,000. Privately, a theatre nurse earns between £25 and £30 per hour.

  • What qualifications do you need to be a theatre nurse?

    To become a theatre nurse you’ll need a nursing degree and to be registered as a nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Council. There are specific theatre nurse roles that require other skills. Operating department practitioner nurses need to be registered on the Health & Care Professions Council and require a DipHE or a BSc degree.

  • How long does it take to become a theatre nurse?

    To become a theatre nurse you need to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and/or the Health & Care Professions Council. Both councils require you to have a nursing degree. Most degree courses last three years. 

  • What are the shift patterns for a theatre nurse?

    All hospitals have different shift patterns, but the traditional hours are:

    Early: 07:00 to 15:00

    Late: 13:00 to 21:00 

    Long day: 07:00 to 21:00

    Night: 21:00 to 07:00

     

    Other examples of theatre shifts:

    8 hours: 06:30-15:00, 08:00-16:30, 10:30-19:00, 13:00-21:30, 14:30-23:00

    10 hours: 06:30-17:00, 08:30-19:00, 10:30-21:00

    12 hours: 06:30-19:00, 07:30-20:00, 18:30-07:00

  • What is an ODP?

    An Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) is a vital part of the operating theatre team. They are responsible for the care of patients undergoing surgery, both pre and post-operation. An ODP will prepare patients for surgery, be involved in the anaesthetic process, and monitor patients during surgery and recovery.
